Abstract
To the Editor: Christina Hoff's reflections on the moral use of animals for scientific research in the January 10 issue are expressed in such general terms that they are likely to have little practical import for readers. No doubt most people agree with Dr. Hoff that animals should not be made to suffer unnecessarily. However, this conclusion leaves up in the air the difficult issue of deciding when an objective warrants inflicting pain on animals.
